Dental root surface conditioner

A dental root surface conditioner is a topical material applied to exposed or scaled root surfaces during dental or periodontal procedures. It is used to remove the smear layer—a thin layer of debris left after cutting enamel or dentin—thereby exposing the underlying collagenous dentin matrix to promote better tissue integration or bonding.

These devices are typically supplied as neutral pH gels containing ingredients such as edetate disodium (EDTA) and carboxymethylcellulose (CMC). They are intended for single use only and are washed off after application; they are not reusable and do not contain medications.
