A respiratory gas thermometer is a non‑sterile instrument designed to measure the temperature of gases flowing through a breathing circuit before they reach a patient’s airway, helping clinicians maintain comfort and ensure therapeutic compliance. It consists of a slender, hollow glass tube with a coloured‑alcohol bulb that indicates temperature via the capillary principle and is inserted into a compatible monitor port such as a Y‑piece connector.

These devices are intended for single‑patient, short‑term use and are typically discarded after a brief period of reuse on the same patient. They are supplied as single‑use items and must comply with the general medical device regulations applicable to non‑sterile, patient‑contact equipment used in home or healthcare settings.
