Prof. Schoenen is a neurologist, founding director of the Headache Research Unit at the neurology department and Honorary full professor at Liège University. He trained at the Neurology and Neuropathology Departments of the Massachusetts General Hospital and at the Neuroanatomy Department of Harvard Medical School. He is board-certified neurologist since 1979 and holds doctoral and post-doctoral degrees from Liège University. He was Research Director of the National Fund for Scientific Research-Belgium and Clinical Professor in Neurology. He is former chairman of the Department of Biomedical and Preclinical Sciences at the Faculty of Medicine – ULg. His Research has focused on headaches and spinal cord anatomy and pathology. He was Associate Editor of Cephalalgia and Editor-in-Chief of Acta Neurologica Belgica. He is Founder of the Belgian Brain Council and a former President of the International Headache Society, the European Headache Federation and the Belgian Neurological Society. He published 483 peer-reviewed articles (H index: 92; i10 index: 348; 33,837 citations), 4 books, 98 book chapters and holds 1 patent.
